Our view of the service

Lakelands Lodge Nursing Home is a care home which provides nursing care to older adults and adults who may be living with dementia. Lakelands Lodge Nursing Home is set over three floors and has a residential floor, nursing and dementia unit. There are 80 rooms and at the time of inspection the service provided support to 63 people. We carried out an inspection of the service on 15 April 2024. The inspection was undertaken by three inspectors and an Expert by Experience. This was an unannounced inspection. The service was previously inspected on 15 March 2023. At this inspection we found improvements had been made in record keeping, learning from incidents, and quality assurance systems. People were kept safe. There were processes to protect people from the risk of abuse and to make sure staff recruitment was safe. There were enough staff to meet people’s needs and permanent staff knew people’s needs and preferences well. The environment met health and safety requirements and the provider was implementing changes following advice from the fire service. People were supported to take their medicines safely; some changes were required to improve the management of prescribed creams. People had their risks and needs assessed and reviewed regularly, and staff knew how to consider people’s mental capacity and consent. People were supported with their wider health needs and staff supported people to attend healthcare appointments. Staff were caring and considerate and supported people to be as independent as possible. The service was effective at providing end of life care and supported people with their wishes and preferences when at the end of their lives. The provider had effective systems to provide oversight and governance of the service. Managers understood risk and were committed to continuous learning and improvement.

People's experience of this service

We asked people and their relatives about their experiences at Lakelands Lodge Nursing Home. People told us they felt safe. One relative said, “I am very confident my wife is safe with the regular staff.” Some relatives thought that agency staff had less knowledge about people however the use of agency staff has reduced recently. Relatives told us the home was kept clean and we saw that the environment was bright and welcoming. There was mixed feedback about the food; some people said it was good and they had enough. We observed small portion sizes and that food looked cold. Some people told us that the food was not always warm. We fed this back to the registered manager and this is going to be addressed. People were positive about receiving support to take their medicines. We found that sometimes staff had not applied topical creams where this may have been beneficial. The registered manager took action to address. People spoke highly of the staff. One person said, “I couldn’t ask for better care.” Relatives said they had a lot of support from the manager and staff. One person said that communication was excellent and they were kept informed of issues and changes. We observed positive and caring interactions between staff and people during the inspection.
