Safeguarding
People told us they felt safe when supported by Impressions Care House. One person told us, “Staff are the best, I screamed the house down when I hurt myself and the staff came to help me.”
Events were recorded and discussed to prevent reoccurrence. Staff confidently explained the actions they took following an incident to reduce the risk of harm to people. Comments from staff included, “We have de-briefings and reflections after any incidents we report, we are fully supported by on call who is here immediately” and, “The managers are great at sorting things out, I've raised my concerns and I know they are looking in to it.”
The registered manager told us safeguarding procedures and best practice were communicated regularly to all staff, with a particular focus on reducing the use of agreed interventions. This was reflected in comments from health and social care professionals who stated, “Impressions Care House ensure everything is risk assessed and put in the correct adjustments required when they are identified to ensure the safety of people.” And “With consistent care, they have facilitated a reduction in instances of challenging behaviour.”
Involving people to manage risks
People told us staff knew how to support them with known risks. Risks to people had been assessed and actions had been put in place to help mitigate risks to help people keep safe.
Staff told us they completed health and safety checks, including fire safety checks of the environment to help ensure risks were mitigated as far as possible. Staff were confident in the training they had received to undertake these tasks and spoke of the support from management to facilitate urgent repairs and improvements when property had been damaged during periods of distress for people.
There were systems in place for staff to report concerns, incidents, and accidents directly to the registered manager. This ensured the provider had oversight and was able to manage risks. The management team completed daily audits of records and visited the person to review the support arrangements if any risks were identified.
Safe environments
We did not look at Safe environments during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Safe.
Safe and effective staffing
People told us they were confident staff knew how to support them safely. One person stated, “I like these staff because they take me out, before I had these carers, I hadn’t left my house for over a year but now we get buses and go to the arcade or wherever I choose.”
Staff stated they received an induction, support from their team members and had regular supervision with the registered manager. A staff member told us, “We can view the policies and procedures anytime; we have step-by-step guides in place to help us, especially in things like incident reporting .”
The provider had effective processes in place to ensure staff had the necessary skills and competence to carry out their roles. Recruitment records showed staff were recruited safely. This included an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks for adults. DBS checks provide information including details about convictions and cautions held on the Police National Computer. The information helps employers make safer recruitment decisions.
