People were supported to express their wishes and preferences with regards to their care and enabled to make decisions. Staff told us the ways in which they supported people to have choice and control and our observations confirmed this happened in practice. There were a range of activities and engagement events taking place at the service, which were facilitated by designated staff. However, it was not clear for people who chose to remain in their rooms the level of engagement they received. Visitors were welcomed and people were supported to maintain relationships with those important to them.

People and their relatives told us they felt they were supported in accordance with their choices and preferences. A person said, “The carers come in and see me and it's my choice to stay here in my room which I like to do.” A relative told us, “They're all so lovely here, so kind I couldn't have wished for more for them. I know how it works here because I came in every day and at different times so know how well it works here all the time.” Another relative said, “Some of the staff here are simply amazing, like the way they interact with [person] and with all the residents here.” A third relative said, “I feel informed about their health and how [person’s] doing, they keep me informed This place covers all aspects, like they always ask how I'm doing too.”

The provider had policies in place which supported staff to ensure people were supported in decision making. The service had an activity schedule in place which covered seven days a week. There were designated staff who took the lead on activities, engagement and providing choices to people about how they spent their time. There was a current visitors policy in place, which supported people to receive visitors and maintain relationships that are important to them.

Staff told us how they provided care in a way which ensured people choices and preferences were respected. A staff member said, “MCA (Mental Capacity Act) is about not making presumptions and allowing people to make decisions and supporting them to have choice.” Another staff member said, “It is a very good care home, and they are well supported both the carers and the people.”

We saw staff respected people’s preferences in regard to gender of staff supporting them and offering choices in their care. We observed 4 people during an activity for 25 minutes. The activity coordinators were seen completing an activity in the communal lounge, however spent limited time in people’s individual rooms. Records viewed did not show people who remained in their rooms were getting any form of interaction with staff or option to be involved in activities they enjoyed. We observed family and friends visiting the service on the day of our visit. Our observations confirmed that visitors were welcomed at the service and relationships between people and those important to them were encouraged.
