Our view of the service

Abbot Care Home is a residential care home providing accommodation with nursing and/or personal care. This was the first assessment carried out under our single assessment framework. This assessment was unannounced. Assessment activity started on 26 March 2024 and ended on 24 April 2024. We visited the service on 26 March 2024. We looked at 11 quality statements which included learning culture, safeguarding, involving people to manage risks, safe environment, safe and effective staffing, infection prevention and control, delivering evidence-based care and treatment, supporting people to live healthier lives, independence choice and control, planning for the future along with governance management and sustainability. At our last inspection (report published 19 October 2023) we found breaches in regulation. At this assessment we found improvements had been made in relation to staffing and governance. However, we found that people’s safety was not consistently maintained through risk management and the planned care required to minimise these. This was a breach of regulation, and the service remains rated Requires Improvement. Care plans and risk assessments were in place and included enough detail to be able to support people safely and in their preferred way. However, care was not always delivered in accordance with these plans and assessments. Whilst audits and checks in place did not identify the omissions in care people were experiencing, they were leading to improvements in many aspects in the service. Feedback received about the management of the service was positive and people, relatives and staff all shared examples of improvements made since the appointment of the registered manager. The provider and registered manager were open to our feedback and gave assurances on how they would use it to drive further improvements at the service. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of this service

People told us they were happy living at Abbot Care Home and they liked the staff, who were kind and helpful. People said they felt safe at the service and were confident that any concerns they might have would be listened to. Staff supported them when they needed and in a way they preferred. People felt involved in their care and were able to make choices regarding day to day living and also their planned future needs.
