Safe and effective staffing
We spoke with relatives of people using the service. They told us staff understand their loved ones needs and staff go over and above to provide support.
Staff told us they received supervision and team meetings. However, staff told us they did not feel they were always effective and were not always provided enough notice to attend team meetings. We raised this with the nominated individual who was going to take action to address these concerns. Records confirmed supervision and competency checks were being completed.
We observed staff were available throughout the day to attend to people when they needed it. Enough staff were on shift and were not rushing around.
We were assured there were enough staff to meet people’s needs and we saw commissioned 1-1 support needs were being met. Staff had the skills and knowledge they needed to provide safe support to people. Staff had completed training; the service was in the process of ensuring new staff had completed training and received competency checks to ensure their training had been put in to practise. The provider had robust and safe recruitment practices in place to make sure all staff were suitably experienced, competent and able to carry out their role before being employed. This included obtaining references and checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The DBS helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and helps prevent unsuitable people from working in care services.
