Independence, choice and control
People were involved in decisions about their care and how they would like to be supported, and their independence was promoted. A person commented, “My carer lets me do some personal care, but she is always next to me in case it goes wrong, or I wobble.” Another person told us, “I choose my own food, clothes and anything else that I need.”
Staff understood the importance of supporting people to maintain or develop their independence. One staff member said, “Supporting people to be independent involves empowering them to make their own choices and being patient and understanding.”
People’s communication needs were assessed before their care package commenced to ensure their plan of care reflected their support needs and their choices and promotion of independence. Care plans contained information about people’s needs including their choices and preferences, however, changes were needed to reduce duplication and ensure information was up to date and fully accurate. The provider was receptive to our findings, and we were assured by the actions they were taking to make the enhancements needed.
