People felt safe and protected from the risk of harm and abuse. Staff supported people who had capacity to make decisions about risk. Risk assessments were completed to promote independence and minimise risks to people. Care plans were clear and provided sufficient guidance to staff to keep people safe. There were sufficient, safely recruited staff who had received training to meet people’s needs.

Safeguarding

People were protected by the provider’s safeguarding policy which guided staff about different types of abuse and how to raise a concern to ensure people were protected.

People felt safe at the home and with the staff who supported them. During the site visit we saw kind and respectful interactions between people and staff.

Staff had received training on safeguarding and abuse. All were confident any issues raised with the registered manager or provider would be fully investigated to make sure people were protected.

Involving people to manage risks

The staff were very good at ensuring risks to people were managed effectively in line with their wishes and abilities.

Risks to people were assessed and measures were put in place to minimise identified risks. For example, we saw that one person was assessed as requiring bedrails and these were in situ.

People and/or their relatives felt they were involved in assessing and managing risks.

Care plans and risk assessments were in place to minimise risks and promote choices.

Safe and effective staffing

Staff were happy in their roles and felt well supported. They told us they received appropriate training and supervision.

People were cared for by staff who had been safely recruited. Records confirmed staff received regular supervision and an annual appraisal to help them develop within their role.

Throughout the day we observed there were adequate staff to meet people's needs and to keep them safe.

People told us staff were always available when they needed help or support. People said if they rang their call bells staff responded promptly.
