Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People and families confirmed they were encouraged and supported to be involved in the care panning process and encouraged to make choices about their care, ensuring their independence was maintained. A relative said, “The girls know that [family member] is not the same every day so they get them to do what they can, when they are able.” Another relative told us, “[Family member] can do quite a lot for themselves so the carers supervise to make sure [family member] is safe while making sure they keep their independence as much as possible. We did [family member's] care plan together and it's routinely reviewed 3 monthly or if anything changes.”

People’s communication needs were assessed before a care package commenced to ensure they were fully supported to understand their rights and able to make decisions about their care. Care plans contained up to date information about people’s needs including their choices and preferences. They contained information for staff guidance to promote people’s independence in areas such as mobility and managing their medicines.

Staff supported people to be independent and encouraged people to do as much as they could for themselves. One member of staff said, “I help promote impedance by encouraging people to do as much as they can for themselves. I always respect the individual’s choice and preferences.” Another staff member told us, “Our aim is to always encourage independence to our service users. To ensure we maintain or increase their independence, we have a positive and good relationship with them. If any decisions are being made for the service users care, we always involve them.”
