Governance, management and sustainability

Score: 3

Staff felt the home was well-led. They felt the registered manager was approachable and managed the staff well. Staff were aware of their roles and responsibilities and how they contributed to the running of the home. A staff member told us the registered manager had instilled a positive culture at the home. They said, “I’ve recommended jobs available at the home. It has a lovely, homely vibe and all staff work together as part of a team which is how it should be. This is the first home I’ve worked at where it doesn’t feel like a job and it’s a pleasure to come to work.” The provider had ensured the registered manager had the processes and resources in place to continually monitor, assess and review the risks to people’s health and safety and the home environment. The registered manager felt supported by the provider and told us the systems that were in place helped them to manage the home effectively.

Robust governance and auditing procedures were place. Regular audits of medicine processes, accidents, incidents, and infection control took place. Some of these audits were delegated to other suitable staff to complete, freeing the registered manager to have overall oversight of the safe management and running of the home. This process helped to reduce the risk to people’s health and safety and provide them with higher quality care. The provider had emergency contingency plans in place should there be a sudden event that could affect the smooth running of the service. This included poor weather planning, staff sickness and national events such as COVID. We saw the provider had engaged with the Fire and Rescue Service and their maintenance person on how to simulate potential fires within the home to monitor staff response. They regularly used projectors to simulate fires in random parts of the home. Staff responses to these incidents were monitored and assessed and used to improve the evacuation process. This helped to keep people safe. People’s care records were stored safely. Paper records were stored in locked cabinets. Electronic records were password-protected. The registered manager was able to identify if unauthorised people had access records. This helped to keep people’s personal data secure.
