Our view of the service
This assessment took place between 2 Oct and 16 Oct 2024. Chestnut Gardens Care Home is a care home providing personal and nursing care to up to 72 people. At the time of our inspection there were 30 people using the service. People were protected from the risk of abuse or harm. Staff understood how to safeguard people and took action to do so when needed. Risks to people were assessed and managed well. Learning from events and incidents was used to improve the safety of the service for people. Health and safety checks were carried out of the premises and equipment to make sure they were safe. Infection risks were managed well and staff followed current practice. There were enough staff to support people. Staff were trained to meet people’s individual needs. Recruitment practice was safe and suitable staff were employed at the service. People received care focussed on them and their individual needs including those related to their protected equality characteristics. People were provided with information which met their individual communication needs. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives. Staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests. People were supported to stay healthy and well and received their medicines when needed. People’s care was regularly reviewed to ensure this remained effective. People were treated equally, fairly, and supported to access care and support that met their needs. Staff understood people’s rights and how these should be met. The service was managed well by a skilled and experienced manager. Staff were valued and supported with their learning, development and wellbeing. Staff were encouraged to be open and raise concerns and these were listened to. There was a culture of improvement and inclusivity at the service. Staff worked with partners to help people achieve positive outcomes.
People's experience of this service
People told us they felt safe at Chestnut Gardens Care Home. They were supported by a staff team that knew how to keep them safe from injury or harm. Staff reported safety concerns about people and took action to keep people safe when needed. People, and others involved in their care, were involved in assessments of their needs. People’s choices and preferences were used to plan and deliver the care and support they needed in line with their individual needs. People had choice and control about how their care and support was provided and staff supported them to be as independent as possible. Staff were skilled and experienced, knew people well and provided care in line with people’s choices and preferences. Staff were caring and treated people well, with great kindness, dignity and respect. People’s health and wellbeing was monitored to ensure they were experiencing positive outcomes from the care and support provided to them. People were treated equally and fairly and supported to access support for their health and care needs when they needed this. There was an open and welcoming culture at the service. There were no visiting restrictions placed on visitors to the home. People undertook a wide range of activities which supported their independence, health and wellbeing. The registered manager understood the needs of people using the service and made sure staff were focussed on meeting these in line with people’s choices and preferences. People’s feedback and experiences were used to continually improve the quality and safety of the service.
