Ratings - Child and adolescent mental health wards
Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 22 October 2024. The Lookout is an inpatient facility open to children and young people aged 13 - 18 years old run by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. It supports those who are experiencing mental health difficulties that can no longer be managed in the community. The unit consists of 3 wards: Phoenix Ward (a 12-bed general adolescent unit), Hercules Ward (an 8-bed psychiatric intensive care unit) and Pegasus Ward (a 12-bed specialist eating disorder service). This assessment has been completed following the Care Quality Commission (CQC) new approach to assessment; Single Assessment Framework (SAF). We have completed 2 assessments at this location using our new approach and therefore its overall rating is a combination of the new and old methodology. This assessment has been completed following the Care Quality Commission (CQC) new approach to assessment; Single Assessment Framework (SAF). This was an unannounced assessment, which means the provider was not told an assessment was going to be starting beforehand. During this assessment we looked at 7 quality statements across 2 key questions; Assessing needs; Monitoring and improving outcomes, Consent to care and treatment, Kindness, compassion and dignity, Treating people as individuals, Independence, choice and control, Workforce wellbeing. As we assessed most of the quality statement within caring, the rating of this key question reflects this assessment. As we did not review enough quality statements from the other key questions means we use the ratings from the previous inspection to rate the key questions safe, effective, responsive and well-led. At this assessment we assessed 2 of the 3 wards: Pheonix ward and Hercules ward.
People's experience of this service
We spoke with 3 young people and reviewed 8 care and treatment plans during this assessment. Young people we spoke with told us the wards were ok, and staff were kind. Young people had access to advocacy services and attended the ward community meetings and were able to raise issues of concern. Care and treatment records were personalised and included young people’s likes, dislikes, strengths and difficulties. Plans were available to young people in friendly language and in a bright and colourful format.
