Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

People told us staff were kind and caring. One person said, “The staff here are very caring and take time with you even if they are busy or short staffed.” Some people were not able to communicate with us verbally. We saw they were happy and appeared comfortable and relaxed in staff company. Relatives were also positive about the staff who supported people. One relative said, “I feel very content; the staff know the people they are looking after. [My relative] doesn’t talk and staff pick up on the subtle changes by knowing them so well and how they communicate using body language.”

Staff were positive about the people they supported. Regular staff knew people well. One staff said, “We have a person-centred approach to caring and supporting the people who live here. Many people are non-verbal, but we can still communicate with them and make sure they are happy and comfortable by using facial expressions, body language, gestures, and non-verbal signs. We give people time, and we offer options and ask permission and wait for them to respond in their own time.”

Concerns had been raised by some health and social care professionals about the service and the support people were receiving. However, the service had been working to make improvements and most of the issues identified had been addressed or were being so at the time of the assessment.

Staff spoke to people in a kind and respectful way and there were positive interactions between staff and people. Staff made conversation with people and people and staff laughed together.
