We assessed the following quality statement: Supporting people to live healthier lives. People spoken with at Cliftonville Care Home told us they knew they could see the Doctor when they need and that one visited the care home three days a week. However fewer people were as confident about accessing a dentist if they needed to. People received visits from district nurses and were supported with advocates and social workers. People were encouraged to remain independent with undertaking daily tasks such as personal care and getting their meal from the dining area. People visited the hospital when they needed to, for example to have physiotherapy. People said if they thought their condition was worsening, they would “tell the nurse”. People told us they were involved in their care planning. People comments included, “Staff explain it all to me, they are very good really” and “staff talk to me and my family”. People told us they go outside when they want to and if the weather is good and that staff support them to do that.

Supporting people to live healthier lives

People and were satisfied with the care they received, and relatives were comfortable knowing their family members were well cared for. People told us they had access to healthcare if they needed it. We spoke with one relative who explained when her loved-one had become unwell a nurse was asked to look at them and assessed they needed hospital care. The relative was happy this was dealt with so promptly. The person was admitted to hospital with suspected sepsis and has since returned to the service after treatment. One person told us they were supported by a family member to attend to their local dentist. People were encouraged to remain active. We observed a game of ball being played with several people on the ‘memory lane’ unit. We saw people living with dementia being assisted to access activities on another floor. Some people also had additional support from a privately funded physiotherapist.

Staff knew people well and understood their individual needs. Staff recognised people’s independence and respected their rights to privacy. The manager was very passionate about the care provided and worked consistently hard to make sure people had choice in all aspects of their lives.

People had access to a GP 3 times a week. A local general practitioner (GP) practice undertook ‘ward’ rounds Monday, Wednesday and Friday. People were encouraged to change GP when they became permanent but were able to remain, if possible with their GP. District nurses visited on a daily basis and people had access to a tissue viability nurse (TVN) a specialist nursing service for wounds that are taking a long time to heal. Observations were undertaken monthly which enabled staff to identify if people became unwell and appropriate action taken. Records showed people had access to dentists when needed.
