People were provided with support from a caring service, they were treated with dignity and respect. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.

Independence, choice and control

The provider had systems and policies to ensure people’s independence was promoted and their rights and choices respected. People's choices and preferences were included in their support plans. These were regularly reviewed and updated as people's requirements changed. Staff regularly met with people to discuss if the plans remained effective and meaningful.

People were provided with support from a caring service. They were fully involved in developing their support plans. It was evident throughout the assessment that people were encouraged to make choices and decisions about the support they required and how they wished to live their lives. They had access to various activities of their choice and the local community to promote their independence, health, and well-being. In the provider’s survey 96% of people who used the service said their carer was polite, courteous and respected their wishes and choices. In addition, 91% said their carer understood their needs and gave them the opportunity to make choices and maintain their independence.

Staff understood the importance of person-centred care and explained how they supported people to have choice and control in their lives. Independence was always encouraged and promoted. Comments from staff indicated they were very proud of the care and support they gave to people. Staff told us, “I always ask people what they would like to happen during my visit. I treat everyone with respect and give them choice about their care and what they want to happen”, “I listen and observe, I show that I am interested in how they are. I respect that I am in their home, I always explain what I am doing and why. I love listening to people’s experiences and stories. I am a very patient person and enjoy working with people who have dementia” and “I visit a lady who said she knew she could trust me from our very first meet which she said was very rare for her. She tells me that I am very empathic. I like the way that I encourage people to be themselves. I always think how I would feel if I was the person being cared for, which I believe enables me to be respectful and genuine.”
