Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People were supported to make their own decisions. People told us they were free to do what they wanted throughout the day. One person told us, “We do lots of activities. We have our self-care day when we clean our room and do laundry and go out. We have planned days out. We choose what we do at the residents' meeting weekly.” People were given a variety of choices of what they would like to do and where they would like to spend time. People were supported with kindness and compassion. People we spoke with were treated with respect and dignity, and had their independence promoted. One person told us, “I lay the table and load and empty the dishwasher. I’m getting better at cleaning my room and making my bed.”

Staff were committed to ensuring people remained in control and received support that centred on them as an individual, they adapted their approach to meet peoples’ individualised needs and preferences. Staff supported people and encouraged them where they were able to be as independent as possible. Care staff informed us that they always prompted people to remain active and carry out tasks for themselves. One member of staff told us, “We always encourage independence, for example enabling people to pay for things and get the change and receipt. Support them to order or book on amazon. There are ways around things. When they go into a pub they should pay for their own drink and carry their drink back to the table.”

Individual person-centred care plans had been developed, enabling staff to support people in a personalised way that was specific to their needs and preferences. These included people’s choices around what they enjoyed doing during the day and their preferences around clothes and personal care.
