Safeguarding

We observed a relaxed environment where people were free to come and go within the service. We observed staff discreetly offer support to people when it was required.

Relatives told us they felt their loved ones were protected from the risk of abuse. One relative said, “They keep us involved If there is anything wrong, every time I visit they always give us an update on how [relative] is. They’re always forthcoming and tell us what goes on in the home.”

People were protected from the risk of harm and abuse. The provider had clear guidance in place for staff and reported any concerns to the local authority as required.

Staff understood their safeguarding responsibilities. Staff explained they had regular training in addition to discussing safeguarding in more detail during their supervision. Staff told us they would not hesitate to raise any concerns with the management team. One staff member said, “I would report directly to my manager I would feel comfortable to do this, of course!”

Involving people to manage risks

Relatives told us they felt their loved ones were safe. One relative said, “I would not have my [relative] living here for so long if I didn’t think they were safe.”

The provider assessed the risks to the health and safety of people using the service. Risk assessments were person centred and provided clear guidance to staff on how to minimise any risks to people. Positive behaviour support plans were in place where needed, these were detailed, and person centred.

We observed staff support one person to walk. They offered gentle encouragement and did not rush the person.

Staff were aware of risks to people and took steps to reduce these where possible. One staff member explained how they would consider a number of options when reducing risk and maintaining independence, for example, by using falls sensors.

Safe and effective staffing

Staff told us, “we always have enough staff on shift”. They told us they received regular supervision and were complimentary about the process. One staff member said, “during supervision, [managers] as us about any challenges we are facing and if we want any help or support. [Managers] work to help us. [Manager] also test our knowledge about our roles, such as Safeguarding and mental capacity.

Relatives we spoke with told us there were enough staff. They told us staff were very attentive to their relatives' needs.

Staff were recruited safely. We reviewed 3 staff files. The provider had a robust recruitment process which included obtaining relevant reference and ensuring people had the required criminal records checks in place. There was a clear training plan in place to support staff knowledge and understanding. Staff were required to complete the care certificate and following successful completion were encouraged to complete further qualifications relevant to their roles.

We observed there were enough staff on duty during the inspection. Staff were not rushed and took their time with people.
