Independence, choice and control

Staff knew people well and worked together to promote people’s independence and involve them in decision making around their care and wellbeing. People commented that staff made time for them, and they were not rushed. People felt staff were respectful of their privacy and dignity and there were lots of comments about staff being caring, kind, friendly and knowing people well.

Staff were able to share how they supported people’s independence and offered choice. One staff member said, “I always offer choice and promote independence as much as possible” another said, “If someone didn’t want to get up I would leave them, it’s up to them.”

Positive interactions were observed where people's independence and safety were balanced and supported appropriately. We observed staff reminding people to use mobility equipment which supported people’s independence whilst managing the risk. The mealtime experience was positive, and people were able to choose when and where to have meals. People were offered choice in a way which met their needs and maintained their independence.

Processes were in place to support people’s independence and choice, including care records and DoLS assessments, capacity assessments and best interest decision records.
