Updated 11 June 2024

People were supported to have choice and control over their own care and to make decisions about where they were going to live. People were supported to maintain relationships and networks that were important to them and had unlimited access to their friends and family. People also had access to activities and the local community to promote and support their independence, health and wellbeing.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People benefitted from having their voices heard and being able to make choices and maintain control over their lives. People told us their independence was promoted and they were supported to live their lives as they chose. One person told us, “I have been here for 3 years. I am happy with the staff and they cook very nice food, I always like this. The food is lovely. I like to go to the pub and play snooker. I don’t drink but every Christmas day I have a glass of champagne with my dinner; I look forward to that”.

The provider told us that despite the fact that the home was closing, people’s choices with regard to where they moved to were of the utmost priority. He said people would not be made to move anywhere they didn’t want to, and he would remain open and continue supporting people until the right accommodation was found for them. For example, one person wanted en-suite facilities and it was confirmed that this had been found. Another person did not want to move away from the area, so they continued living in Keats House until new accommodation in their required location was found.

We saw that people felt free to come and go as they pleased within the home and those who chose to smoke had a comfortable designated area outside. We saw it was common practice for people to pop into the office for a chat whenever they wanted and they were comfortable doing this. We saw people were relaxed and interacted well with staff. People chose their meals and, although there were suggested menus, people could still make alternative choices. We saw some people chose to play cards during our visit and there were other games on the shelves that people could choose from. There was a notice board near the kitchen, which had the weekly menu on it, as well as pictures of people enjoying leisure time such as playing pool in the pub, on trips to the seaside and spending time in the garden. There was also information about other organisations and local community events, which kept people informed about other choices on offer.

We saw in the minutes from recent staff meetings that the home closure had been discussed. All staff were informed of the need to ‘support residents as much as possible for a smooth transition’. People’s meals, including their likes, dislikes and choices were also discussed and it was confirmed that staff would maintain the quality of care and approach. Staff were also reminded they must continue to ‘encourage residents to participate in activities and with the daily chores’. Other records, communication and information we saw confirmed people were fully involved in their care reviews and assessments and had their choices and preferences listened to. This assured us people could make genuine choices about what they did and where they moved to.
