There were systems in place to ensure the quality of the home was monitored. The provider and registered manager completed numerous audits, when needed improvements had been identified and there were plans in place to ensure these were made. Staff felt supported and listened to and spoke positively about the management team and the running of the home.

Shared direction and culture

Leaders and staff were aware of the values of the organisation and spoke positively about the culture of the home. The registered manager shared with us about how they supported and considered people’s protected characteristics and gave us examples of this.

There were processes in place to ensure there was a positive culture in the home this included ensuring the well being of staff and ensuring staff had received training that gave them the skills and knowledge to promote a positive environment.

Capable, compassionate and inclusive leaders

All staff we spoke with were happy with how the home was run and the support their received from their line manager or the registered manager. One staff member said, “Its brilliant, any little problem is resolved quickly so it stops it escalating, it helps us to be a good staff team and we all pull together.”

There were systems in place to ensure staff and the registered manager understood their roles and responsibilities. We saw these systems were followed to ensure a positive culture was created within the home.

Freedom to speak up

The registered manager told us there was a whistle blowing policy in place and there was also a confidential phone line available for staff. They went onto tell us they had an open-door policy and staff could talk with them at any time. Staff told us they felt confident to raise concerns and that action would be taken. One staff member said, “Staff are encouraged to raise concerns, if they see something or are concerned about something, I am aware of the policies in place and I am sure the manager would take action.”

There was a whistleblowing policy in place and the service had created an environment where staff were able to speak up and raise concerns when needed.

Workforce equality, diversity and inclusion

The registered manager was able to tell us about the policies and procedures that were in place to ensure staff were treated with equality, diversity and in an inclusive way. Staff we spoke with raised no concerns. One staff member, “I feel I am treated fairly here.”

There were procedures in place to consider staffs individual needs, this included considering staff’s diverse needs and treating all staff fairly and equitable.

Governance, management and sustainability

Staff felt supported and listened to by the registered manager and all the management team. They told us they had the opportunity to attend a variety of meetings. Staff told us they enjoyed working for the company. One staff member said, “I love it, I am supported by management team and other staff.” The registered manager was able to explain how the service and people’s care was monitored. They explained how audits were used to identify areas of improvement and actions they would take if needed.

The systems in place had identified concerns we identified around care planning. An audit had taken place on people’s individual care records and action plans were in place to address these concerns and make the necessary changes. There were other audits completed within the home, including in relation to health and safety and medicines management which were effective in identifying areas of improvements and implementing positive changes.

Partnerships and communities

People and relatives confirmed the home worked with other agencies to deliver people’s individual care needs.

Both leaders and staff confirmed that they worked in partnership with other agencies. One staff member said, “We have access to a variety of professionals we can get advice from or make a referral to if needed, we know we can’t do everything ourselves.”

As part of this assessment, we asked for feedback from the local authority and the integrated care board. The feedback was generally positive. No concerns were raised with how the home collaborated and worked in partnership with them.

There were systems in place to ensure they work in partnership with other agencies, and this ensured positive outcomes for people and improved care.

Learning, improvement and innovation

The registered manager was able to tell us about the procedures that were in place to learn and improve the home. The registered manager told us that the homes biggest area of improvement would be care planning and risk assessments. They told us an internal audit had been completed and an action plan had been put into place to ensure improvements were made. Staff confirmed to us they were aware of action plans, and this was shared with them. One staff member said, “We are working on the care plans and risk assessments, we have an action plan in place, and we have individual action plans for people to see what needs completing, we are working through these”.

The systems in place including the audits were effective in identifying concerns and making changes. When incidents or safeguarding had occurred, the registered manager ensured lessons were learnt from this.
