People’s individual preferences were respected and promoted by staff. One person told us they were “not social” and liked to stay in their own room. This was respected by staff and they supported this decision. People were supported to spend each day as they chose, what time they got up and where they spent their day. This information was reflected in their care plans. Staff knew people well and this enabled them to identify changes in people’s health or well-being. Staff had identified a subtle change in one person’s presentation. They sought medical attention and the person received the appropriate treatment promptly. People’s relatives were involved in the development and review of care plans. Where possible people were involved.

There were processes in place to help ensure the provider received feedback about the quality of the care and service provided. Care plan reviews took place monthly and allowed people and their relatives to provide feedback about their views on the care and service. There was a complaints procedure, regular meetings with people and staff where they could make suggestions and give ideas for improvements. There were informal opportunities throughout the day where all those who lived, worked at, or visited the home could provide feedback or raise any concerns.

Staff used their knowledge of people to review and develop people’s care plans. One staff member told us, “I am asked about changes, preferences, deterioration of people. This information is used to update and review care plans.” The provider and registered manager had made a well-being program available to staff. This was a confidential service that staff could contact if they needed support with health and well-being matters. The registered manager told us this had been successful and was able to share examples of these successes. The registered manager had developed a newsletter which was regularly sent out to people. This included information about coming events, photos of previous events, birthday celebrations. It also provided information about new staff so people and relatives knew who was working at the home. There were also messages from the provider and registered manager. Staff had a good understanding of how to ensure people were treated equally and without prejudice. They received training in person centred approach and communication. They also received information about equality and diversity and Human Rights.
