Independence, choice and control
People's care plans included details of their choices and preferences. There was also information about people’s life history and this was used as a basis to develop the care plans. Care plans were regularly reviewed and updated as people's needs changed. People and where appropriate their relatives were involved in the development and review of care plans.
One person told us, “Staff are terrific.” This person went on to tell us how they were able to make their own decisions and choices each day but where they needed help staff would support them. Visitors told us how their loved ones were supported. One visitor described how staff would encourage, remind and prompt people to retain their own skills and independence. When needed, further support was provided. Throughout the inspection we observed staff enabling people to make their own choices and decisions. At lunchtime people were offered a choice of meal by being shown plates of the actual meal. This meant people were able to use all their senses (including smell) to help them make their choices. The layout and design of the home helped people to retain independence. This included clear signposts to guide people. People with dementia often have trouble seeing dimensions or lose their ability to see changes in colour. The armchair seats were contrasting colours to the frame of the chair. Toilet seats were a contrasting colour to the toilet. This helped people to identify where to sit and where the toilet was in the bathroom. Visitors told us they were always welcomed at the home. They were able to visit whenever they wished and were supported to remain involved in their loved ones care.
Staff understood how to support people with dementia. They knew people well and told us how they used their knowledge of people and their life history to provide the care and support people needed. Staff told us about a person who enjoyed walking but was a risk of falling. Staff supported the person to regular walks within the home each day. Staff explained how this helped to retain the persons sense of identity, their independence and maintain their physical health. Staff told us how they used people’s life history to develop activities that were relevant to each person but which others may also enjoy. For example, number based games for a person who had worked in finance, and history based activities for a person with an interest in history. One person’s first language was not English, another person also spoke a second language. Staff told us how they had learnt simple words and phrases to help support these people. Staff told us people's ability to communicate changed with their dementia and it was important to enable them as many opportunities as possible to maintain their abilities. Picture cards were also available.
