During an assessment under our new approach

Derby House is a residential care home located in the town of Barnsley. It offers a holistic and therapeutic recovery support model for up to 3 adults with mental health support needs. At the time of our site visit, there were 2 people living at the service. This is the first assessment of the service since it was registered in August 2023. This assessment was undertaken from 9 September 2024 and ended on 26 September 2024. We looked at 33 quality statements, covering the 5 key questions: safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led. People’s needs were assessed, managed, and kept under review. People were supported to stay safe and were protected from risk of abuse. The service had enough staff with the right qualifications, skills, training, and experience to keep people safe from avoidable harm and abuse and to provide the right care and treatment. People received person-centred care, risks were managed, and they were supported with medicines. Care plans captured the voice of people and placed them at the centre of their care. People lived in a clean and well-maintained home. Staff knew people well, and people’s emotional and social needs were valued by staff and informed care and support. Relationships between staff and people were caring and supportive. People were treated with respect, kindness, and care and were encouraged to maintain their independence. People were offered choices, and their decisions were respected. People’s quality of life was enhanced by a range of social events and community integration. Health professional involvement was sought in response to people’s changing needs. Managers were inspiring and strove to motivate staff to succeed. Staff were proud to work for the service and spoke highly of the culture of teamwork and support. The leadership, governance structures and culture within the service were used to effectively drive and improve the delivery of high quality person-centred care.
