Shoemaker Place is a residential care home providing personal care to up to 66 people. The service provides support to older people with dementia, physical disabilities or sensory impairments. At the time of our assessment there were 37 people living over 2 levels in 1 adapted building. We visited the service on 03 and 04 April 2024 following concerns received about the quality of care provided. This service was registered with us on 09 May 2023 and this is the first inspection. We found two breaches of the legal regulations in relation to safe care and treatment and governance. We found improvements were required with how people’s medicines and health risks were managed, safeguarding processes and incident management, learning lessons when things went wrong, effectiveness of care plans, working with external partners and the governance of the service. However, people were treated with kindness and compassion, were supported to have choice and control and could give feedback on their care. In instances where CQC have decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and/ or appeals have been concluded.

People's experience of the service

While the people we spoke to expressed that they were safe and had no reason to raise any safeguarding concerns, our assessment found systems in place to keep people safe were not always effective. While people gave mixed feedback about how they were supported to manage their risks, we found people’s risks were not always monitored or escalated when required. While people told us they attended meetings and received feedback about the service, people were not always involved in reviewing their care plans. While people told us there had been a lot of staff changes recently, people felt there were enough staff who knew their needs and treated them with kindness and compassion. People told us the care home was clean and tidy and the atmosphere was homely. People told us they were treated as individuals and were able to choose the care they received, and staff respected their wishes. People told us the provider planned for their future care needs. People told us they were happy with how the care home worked with others to ensure their needs were met.
