Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

People and relatives told us they were supported by staff that knew them well and treated them with kindness and compassion. One person told us, “All the staff are very helpful and kind. There isn’t anyone I don’t like. I think they are all very polite and respectful.” Another person said, “The staff here are all very nice and thoughtful. I have no issues with privacy even when having my shower. The staff are very conscious and careful.” A further person told us, “The staff are all lovely and I get on with them all very well. I do like my privacy, so I usually go to my room after lunch to be on my own for a while. The staff know this and make sure not to disturb me.” All relatives spoken with were complimentary about the staff team. Comments included, “The staff are exceptionally friendly and caring. We have never had any concerns about the way [person] is treated and they (staff) pay every attention to be respectful to them,” “I have seen them stand back to be respectful and allow people to be independent. They are very patient and conscious of privacy,” and “The staff need a medal. They are all very kind and caring and try very hard to give [person] a good quality of life.”

We observed positive interactions between people and staff. People appeared comfortable with staff and staff supported people with kindness and patience.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us they were treated with respect and dignity, and had their independence promoted. One person told us, “I am still quite independent here and the staff are very helpful making sure I have everything I need so that I can manage on my own.” Another person said, “I try to be very independent and get about with my frame. I have never had a fall and there is usually plenty of space to get about with my frame.” Relatives told us people were supported to be independent, make choices and be in control of their lives as much as possible. One relative said. “We are more than satisfied with the care and [person’s name] quality of life has improved greatly since being there and this is all down to the fabulous staff. [Person name] is constantly assessed to make sure they can keep as much independence as possible but that they remain safe. Another relative said, “[Person name] independence is very limited, so the staff support them and help them to care for themselves as much as possible.” A further relative said, “They (staff) listen well to [person name] and help [person name] maintain some independence and do the things they like to do.”

People were supported in a way that was caring and promoted their independence. For example, we saw a person independently laying tables for lunchtime. We also saw staff promoting people’s independence with their daily chores such as shopping, cooking and doing their own laundry.
