Whilst most interactions between staff and residents were positive and caring, more work was needed to ensure people’s dining experience was positive. People were supported to maintain relationships with those important to them and there were activities available at the home.

Independence, choice and control

People and their relatives told us they were made to feel welcome when visiting the service. Relatives and visiting professionals told us how they observed activities within the home on their visits and had no concerns around the interactions and found staff to be kind and helpful. People who ate in their bedrooms told us they were not given a choice of meals, whereas we saw a choice of two meals offered to those eating in the dining room.

Leaders told us how they were working to increase the involvement from people and their relatives into care plans. Capacity assessment and best interest meetings were also under review as these did not meet the expected standard. We saw that resident and family meetings had been held since the change in management.

We saw how the service had put a refreshments table in the home so people could freely access drinks and snacks outside of mealtimes. The environment and restrictions did not always encourage independence and freedom of movement. For example, people could not independently access a safe outside space, some door handles made it hard for those living with dementia to use them and bathrooms had external locks on them. The service rectified the issues around locks and door handles following feedback.

We saw how visitors were able to visit the home without notice and at any time of the day. We saw a monthly timetable of activities within the home; however, these did not always take place as scheduled. At the time of the inspection there was no activities coordinator in post due to internal promotion and activities we observed were not inclusive of those less able to engage. A new activities coordinator was recently recruited, and staff were covering the role while they awaited their start date.
