Independence, choice and control
A family member said, “Staff do promote independence and choice although this is difficult due to communication. Staff understand eye movements and facial expressions. I appreciate all the staff do and they communicate so well with me.” Another family member said, “Staff have taught [relative] a lot, Relative] is supported to manage money and budget’s well while having the things they choose.”
Staff understood person centred care and were able to explain how they ensured people were given choice in a meaningful way to promote control in their lives. Staff spoke positively and warmly about people. A staff member said, “I treat each person as an individual, ensure all personal care is behind a closed door, I offer choices as far as possible, if I cannot use spoken word, I use objects of reference to help them make choices.”
We observed staff communicating choices to people and promoting their independence through hand over hand support to complete tasks. We observed staff respecting people’s choice not to get out of bed before they were ready. We observed staff treat people with kindness and as individuals, promoting their rights.
