Independence, choice and control
People were supported by staff to maintain their independence. People were walking around independently within the service without restriction and chatting with each other and staff. Where people needed support to make choices, staff were supporting this, for example, if they wanted to change their mind about the meal they had chosen, or what activities they would like to do. We saw people engaged in various activities throughout the day. People who did not want to join in and just watch were free to do this. There were also different areas people could choose to sit if they did not want to join in. One person was reading a newspaper in a small lounge while activities were taking place in another area.
People were supported by staff to maintain their independence as much as possible. People were supported to continue to undertake activities and access the community. One person told us, “I have had a lot of day trips out. It’s like two friends meeting up rather than carers.” Another person told us they’d been out to the shops. Some people preferred to spend more time in their rooms and told us staff supported them to do so.
Staff encouraged people to make choices for themselves throughout the day and offered people choices. For example, people chose where they wanted to eat their lunch. Staff were reassuring and had a positive attitude when speaking with people, which promoted independence and decision making. One staff said, “Everyone deserves to be cared for well”.
Care plans reflected what people could do for themselves to enable staff to promote independence. They also included information on people’s preferences. There were also visiting policies in place and people told us they were able to have visitors when they wanted to.
