People told us they were supported to make choices and decisions and we observed staff listening to people and giving them time to respond. During our site visit, staff were observed being kind, caring and compassionate with people, with hospitality extended to relatives. People’s independence was promoted, and they chose how they spent their time. A good range of activities are on offer for people, with staff going the extra mile to make events and special occasions memorable.

Independence, choice and control

People told us they had choice and control over their care and treatment, were able to have visitors and maintain relationships with people important to them. There was a varied choice of activities and entertainment that people could join in with if they wished to do so.

Staff told us they promoted people’s independence and choice, which enabled people to have better control over their care. The Registered Manager told us they had policies in place setting out people’s rights. Staff also told us the activities officer was excellent and ensured activities and events were inclusive for all people living at the home.

We observed people being supported to have choice and control over their own care, maintaining independence where possible. Examples included people applying their own creams. Staff were observed warmly welcoming visitors and supporting people to maintain relationships and networks that were important to them. Some relatives chose to visit their loved one daily and the home promoted this.

Care plans identified the support people needed and where they were independent. Plans included ways staff should support people to maximise their independence.
