Assessing needs

People and relatives told us they had worked closely with the provider before care was provided to ensure care and support was provided effectively.

The registered manager told us there was a holistic approach to assessing people referred to the service. Staff told us they had the information required to be able to provide care and support.

The provider had a clear and up to date Admissions Policy. This clearly demonstrated the provider's commitment to working closely with people and their representatives. Initial assessments were detailed and involved the person, family members and other key representatives.

People and relatives spoke positively about staff’ understanding people's needs and seeking consent, before providing care and support. One person said, "I decide what I want to do."

Staff demonstrated a good understanding of capacity and consent. They were able to describe what they would do where people refused care and support.

Processes were in place to ensure people's capacity was assessed, and where people lacked capacity to make decisions effective assessments and records had been completed. Staff had received training in the Mental Capacity Act and how this impacted on their practice.
