Caring
Families and friends were welcome at the service and involved as partners in their relatives care and support. A big emphasis was placed on people being at the centre of their care and support. We saw that staff respected people and their own private space. We observed staff knock on bedroom doors and ask if they could enter, waited for a response and then enter following an invitation. They then introduced themselves and informed the person what they wanted to discuss or do. Support plans included how people communicate and how they express their feelings.

Independence, choice and control
We saw that staff respected people and their own private space. We observed staff knock on bedroom doors and ask if they could enter, wait for a response and then enter following invitation and introduced themselves and informed the person what they wanted. Families and friends were welcomed and involved as partners in their relative’s care and support. We observed people going out and about and taking part in activities that interested them. People were supported to access the community and live a full and independent life.
Staff had a good understanding of care planning and assessing people’s needs. They understood the importance of involving people and their families in the process. One member of staff told us, “We include people and relatives [in the assessment process] It's all about the person so we would not exclude them.” Another member of staff said, “We have good relationships with people and their relatives. We hold open discussions with them which ensure assessments are accurate.”
There was an emphasis on people being at the centre of their own care and support. People’s support plans included information about how they communicated and how they expressed their feelings. Person centred planning meetings took place where discussions took place about planning outings and activities that people wanted to be involved in. This included planning holidays.
People were cared for appropriate and they were happy with the quality of care and support provided. A family member told us, “The care has been really good and the support has been brilliant. They keep me informed.”
