Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

Some relatives felt that having so many agency staff in some houses meant that staff did not always understand people’s needs and they saw at times people were not supported in a caring way. Other people and their relatives told us that staff were supportive and caring.

Managers told us they promoted caring support through induction, training, supervisions and team meetings. Managers also said they tried to lead by example. Staff told us the provider was a caring organisation towards the people they support and to their staff. One staff member said, “My staff team are caring and I would be happy for them to look after my own family members. They show compassion and treat the people who we support like family.” Staff told us they were aware of privacy and data protection processes. Another staff member told us the staff team were, “Caring and genuinely love the people we support”. However, they also commented that there was a high turnover of staff.

Stakeholders told us people were not always responded to in a timely manner.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People’s experiences were mixed. Some relatives told us people were supported with their individual choices. However, other relatives told us they did not feel people were supported enough to make choices for themselves.

Managers told us they encourage staff to support people with choice to ensure that they could live fulfilling lives, for example people choosing where to go on their holidays. One person was supported well to make choices about their health treatment when they needed complex medical interventions.

We saw people supported positively to make day to day choices by staff.

Care plans were comprehensive and managers ensured that peoples likes and dislikes were recorded. For people who could not make choices themselves there were records of best interest meetings for people.
