Independence, choice and control
People were complimentary of the care and support they received at the service. One person said, “I am well looked after, have my hair done, my feet done, the dentist was here yesterday as well.” Another person said, “My room is very comfortable, I have a big bed and the heating is set to how I like it.”
Staff took time to get to know people and learn how they wished to be supported. Staff understood people’s rights and worked with them as individuals to promote positive outcomes for them. People were supported to access the community and to have visitors at the service. The registered manager told us they had a visiting hut in the garden which since the pandemic has now been used to host parties. They told us one person celebrated their birthday with relatives from all over the world.
We observed people were given choices how they wished to spend their time during the day and which activities they wanted to join in with. One person said, “I prefer to stay up quite late and watch television, I am usually the last to go to bed.”
Care was planned in a person centred way with the involvement of people and relatives where appropriate. People’s care needs were regularly reviewed and updated when needed so that staff had the most up to date information on how people preferred to be supported.
