During a routine inspection

During the visit we spoke with one person who used the service and observed the way staff interacted with other people. The person we spoke with told us that staff checked with him before they provided any support to make sure he was happy with what was planned. The person said he was able to say he didn't want care or support at certain times and staff respected this.

The person we spoke with told us he received the support that he needed and said people were well treated by staff. We observed staff communicating with people in ways which were set out in their communication plans in order to provide reassurance and meet their specific needs.

People were protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines. One person who used the service that we spoke with confirmed that staff supported him to take his medicines when he needed them.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out an inspection in October 2012 when we identified concerns with records, for example care plans. We made a compliance action asking the provider to take action in order that we were reassured that people were in receipt of safe and adequate care. The provider wrote to us and told us what action they were going to take.

We carried out an inspection on 29 January 2013 to review the progress the provider had made to be compliant in the area where we had previously assessed them as non compliant.

Forest Lodge is a home for people with a learning disability they are registered for five people. On the day we inspected there were four people living at Forest Lodge. During our inspection we spoke with four staff and two people who use the service.

People who lived at Forest Lodge had complex needs and were not able to tell us what they thought about the care and support provided. They were able to tell us they were happy living at Forest Lodge giving us thumbs up and telling us of their plans for the afternoon. We saw that staff were friendly and respectful and that they were quick to respond if anyone appeared unhappy or distressed.

Staff told us about the care plans and records and how they support the independence of people who use the service and facilitate them accessing the community. Staff we spoke with were happy with the changes in the care plans and records.

16 October 2012

During a routine inspection

Forest Lodge is a home for people with a learning disability they are registered for five people. On the day we inspected there were three people living at Forest Lodge. During our inspection we spoke with one relative, four staff and two people who use the service.

People who lived at Forest Lodge had complex needs and were not able to tell us what they thought about the care and support provided. They were able to tell us that that time they were happy, what they had done in the morning and what they would like to do in the afternoon. We spent time in their company in the lounge observing the support they received. We saw that staff were friendly and respectful and that they were quick to respond if anyone appeared unhappy or distressed.

Relatives said that they had 'good communication' with the staff at the service; they trusted that information was handed on, phone calls were always returned. 'I am involved in the care of my son, and I worry less now that he is here'.

Staff said they liked working at Forest Lodge, 'I must like it here it is the longest I have worked anywhere'.
