The Sandford Nursing Home is a care home providing personal and nursing care to up to 35 people. At the time of the inspection 34 people were using the service. The service provides support to people over 65 and younger adults including those with physical disabilities. Our assessment of the service started on 1 July 2024 and ended on 13 August 2024. Two inspectors carried out an unannounced visit to the home on 16 July 2024 and 1 inspector visited the home on 17 July 2024. During our assessment of the service, we looked at all the quality statements relating to all of the key questions. This was the first assessment of the service since a change in the provider in October 2020. We found 4 breaches of the legal regulations in relation to safe care and treatment, person centred care, need for consent and good governance. People were not always protected from environmental risks and there were no effective systems in place to analyse and learn from accidents or incidents. There were no systems in place to ensure people’s wishes for end-of-life care and following death would be respected. Staff did not always follow the principles of the Mental Capacity Act to ensure people were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and that important decisions were made in their best interests. Systems to monitor and improve the quality and safety of the service provided were not always effective in identifying shortfalls or driving improvements. We received mixed feedback from professionals about how the service worked with them. Staff had the training and skills to carry out their role effectively. There were enough suitably trained and competent staff to meet people’s needs.
