Score: 3

People told us they were involved in decisions about their care and their religious and spiritual beliefs were respected. One person told us, “Some very good people working here.” One relative told us, “My experience of Elm Park is a very positive one. The staff on Mitchell Suite know and understand the needs of the residents. They often, in my opinion go above and beyond. Whilst I was on holiday, one member of staff even used her own phone to face time me so I could see Mum, something like that is amazing, helping the resident and most definitely the relatives.”

Staff offered people the support in line with their needs. This included, purchasing adapted cutlery to support a person’s independence, and arranging parties and gifts to celebrate people’s milestones and areas of interest. The registered manager told us the wellbeing staff arranged events to celebrate diversity and enhance inclusivity in the home. The staff team were alert to discrimination and inequality. They told us they were provided with training on equality, diversity and inclusion. This helped to raise awareness of people’s rights. They worked with people, those close to them and other professionals to make sure people received support they needed in relation to their protected characteristics. Protected characteristics are specific attributes safeguarded against discrimination under the Equality Act 2010. These include age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

People’s care and support was tailored to meet their needs and the provider made sure the processes and policies in the service were underpinned by human rights and equality law. People’s care plans included their protected characteristics, including their specific cultural or religious needs and preferences. This helped to make sure the service complied with equality and human rights requirements, including avoiding discrimination and protecting people from unfair treatment.
