The practice is based within Thames View Medical Centre, Bastable Avenue, Barking, Essex IG11 0LG. The practice is situated in a residential area, away from Barking town centre. Car parking is available to the front and rear of the premises. The practice is well served by local buses. Thames View Medical Centre is a modern, purpose-built building which the practice shares with another GP practice and various local community services such as health visitors.
The practice staff team includes a principal GP, two salaried GPs, two nurse practitioners and two practice nurses, a practice manager and seven reception/ administrative staff. The principal GP and one of the salaried GPs provide nine sessions each per week with a further six sessions provided by the other salaried GP. The three nurses provide a total of twenty-four sessions between them. The practice manager and senior receptionist work full time with all other staff working part time.
The practice is open from 8am and 7pm Monday to Friday. In addition, it provides extended access clinics from 7am to 8am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and on Mondays from 7pm to 8pm. Outside of these hours, cover is provided by the out of hours GP service which operates from 6:30pm to 8am Monday to Friday, and 24 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday, and the NHS 111 service.
Dr Gurkirit Kalkat is one of a number of GPs commissioned by Barking and Dagenham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). It has a practice list of around 8500 which is expected to increase due to new large housing developments being built in the area. The practice’s patient population has an above average proportion of patients under the age of 18 years at 34% compared to the national average of 21%, and a below average proportion of patients aged over 65 years at 4% compared to the national average of 17%. Public Health England and the 2011 census data show the practice population ethnicity as: White British (46.1%), Black (31.5%), Asian (15.6%), Mixed (4.8%) and Other (1.9%). In terms of deprivation, Barking and Dagenham is in the second most deprived decile.
