During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our last inspection in September 2013, we saw that the arrangements for dealing with medical emergencies were not adequate. We identified that patients were not always protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider did not have appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines held at the practice. We set compliance actions and told the provider to improve

The purpose of this inspection was to see if improvements had been made since our last inspection in September 2013. We gave the provider short notice of our inspection so that any disruption to people's care and treatment were minimised. During the inspection we spoke with five members of staff, this included the practice manager and a GP who was also a partner at the practice. We found that the provider had made the necessary improvements.

There were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable medical emergencies.

Patients were protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines.

During a routine inspection

As part of our inspection we spoke with seven patients who used the service. This included two patients who were members of the patient participation group that we spoke with by telephone after our visit. We also spoke with six members of clinical and administrative staff. This included two GP's and the practice manager.

Patients spoken with were positive about with the care they received at the practice and told us that they were treated with dignity and respect. However, many patients were not happy with the appointment system. Comments received from patients included: 'The doctors when they check you are good but if you can't see them how can you say they are good' and 'The surgery as a whole is very nice. They will help and try their best to squeeze you in.'

Patients were protected from the risk of abuse because the provider had put in place appropriate arrangements.

Quality monitoring systems were also in place at the practice. There were opportunities for patients and staff to comment on the quality of the service and regular audits were undertaken to identify areas for improvement.

We had some concerns with the management of medicines that were available for use in an emergency. This could result in patients, in need of emergency assistance, not receiving the support they need.
