Safe and effective staffing

Score: 3

As part of this assessment, we received 1 piece of feedback from patients which raised concerns about the competence of a member of staff following an experience of care. However, none of the other feedback related to this area.

Overall feedback from staff and leaders was positive. Although a small number of staff raised concerns about the provider’s processes to ensure safe and effective staffing, almost all the staff feedback was highly positive and told us staff could undertake training related to their role and could request additional training or support required to meet their needs. Staff felt well supported and explained supervision was effective, accessible and helped them to develop in their roles. Leaders within the practice explained how recruitment processes followed legislation and ensured the right staff were employed in terms of skill mix and numbers to make sure people received good quality care which met their needs.

Our assessment found the practice had an effective recruitment process and staff were appropriately qualified and trained and where required, held registrations with professional bodies. Processes to support staff development and identify learning needs existed and this included a framework which determined role specific training. Staff had completed required training. Processes existed to ensure staff operated within their competence and had access to appropriate clinical supervision. The practice was aware of several members of staff who had not had their annual appraisal in line with their policy and had arranged for these appraisals to be completed as a priority.
