Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People and their relatives told us staff respected people’s choices, helped them to feel in control of their support and to build their independence. One person explained to us how they planned what to have for lunch and when they would have their meal. Relatives told us how staff supported people to do what they liked, for example, to go out, to do cooking or photography. One relative also, “[Staff] encourage [person] to do different things.”

Staff supported people to be as independent as possible, to enjoy doing things they liked safely and to build their skills. Staff said about what they aimed for when supporting people, “We make [people’s] lives as fulfilled as they can be” and “We ask people what they would like to do rather than assume it for them. It is involving them at their pace and not making them do anything they do not want to do.” Staff gave us multiple examples of how they supported people to express themselves, to gain new skills and knowledge, to manage their daily lives and to engage with their local community.

During the site visit, we saw how staff supported people to do what they had planned for the day. People were proud of their home, achievements, hobbies and plans. Staff assisted people to prepare questions to ask CQC during the site visit which enabled people to provide feedback freely and confidently.

Staff ensured each person was treated and valued as an individual and their support was tailored to their own ambitions, likes, skills and abilities. People were involved in planning their support. They had regular meetings with peers and managed day-to-day running of their home with staff’s support. Where action was needed to make improvements, staff supported people to do that. Staff also organised a range of tasks, events and meetings so people had different opportunities. For example, to express themselves and their lived experiences in a supportive way, to learn about environmental sustainability, safety, sexuality or health and safety or to share their feedback with their peers. People’s achievements were celebrated in a monthly newsletter, distributed to people, their family members and stakeholders.
