Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

Staff told us, they enjoyed getting to know people and had been able to support people to remain independent. Staff understood that people’s needs varied with one staff member commenting, “Most of the residents are at different stages of their lives, many need help but others ….. very independent.”

We observed activities on both floors to be mixed. We observed activities which were not always appropriate for people, and at times people became distressed. On the ground floor there was also a parrot that at times was noisy, the parrot had not been at the home long, but the noise was not conducive to a calm dementia environment. However, the second day of inspection, we found the atmosphere was calm, classical music played in the background and the parrot was no longer residing in this lounge. We observed staff spending time with people, talking, doing cross words and arts and crafts.

People’s relatives told us they felt involved with care planning in order for the service to understand their family members choices and preferences. Comments from people’s relatives included, “They involved us in how the care home can do better. I would feel very comfortable approaching any of the staff about his care plan” and “I am confident I can ask about her health and when I go, I ask for an update so Yes, I feel I am involved in her care.” People were encouraged to do as much as they could for themselves. Feedback from people’s relatives on activities and social stimulation was mixed. Comments included, “That [activities] is the only thing they seem to lack. Some of the other residents are in late dementia but they don't seem to do much.” and “At first when you go and you think I wish they would do more, but when I visit, and I see them do activities my [family member] can't do anything.”

There was processes in place to support people and families to have choice and control over their own care and to make decisions about their care, treatment and wellbeing where possible. People were able to maintain relationships and networks that are important to them. Relatives were involved in their family member’s care. People did have access to activities to support their independence, health and wellbeing. However, there had been several changes to the activities, which resulted in mixed feedback. The provider had identified this as an area for improvement and work in this area was ongoing.
