Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

Staff had a caring approach and described how they promoted choices. Staff gave us examples of asking people what they would like to wear and what they would like to eat. The registered manager told us, "We streamline the care for people. They are involved in the care plan it gives them control. We monitor and review but we are flexible so we can adapt. We are not a rigid.” They added, “Staff know communication with the client is important. We encourage that. It’s important because a client can change their mind. Then staff can report it to the office and we can go out to see what needs to change and make the change.”

People's care plans were up to date and regularly reviewed. Care records contained information about preferences, likes and dislikes. Systems for communication were effective in maintaining relationships with people and relatives.

One relative told us, “I knew you (CQC) would be calling so I asked [Person's Name] about the carers, so I could tell you. They said they were very happy and that staff do everything they ask. Staff ask what [Person's Name] would like to wear, what they would like to eat and chat with them. [Person's Name] is happy.” The relative added, “We are involved with everything. We read the books and look at the plans.”
