During an inspection in response to concerns

We carried out an unannounced inspection of Private Ambulance Service LTD on 16 July 2014 following information of concern raised regarding ambulance crews being overworked and exhausted which could put patients at risk. There were also concerns about the poor level of equipment provided on some of the vehicles at the Private Ambulance Service LTD. We found no evidence to support any of these concerns.

We saw that suitable equipment was available on the vehicles in sufficient quantities in order to ensure the safety of service users and which met their assessed needs. We also found that the provider had taken appropriate steps to ensure that at all times there were sufficient numbers of suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff employed so that staff were not overworked or exhausted.

We found that the provider had a system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people received. We noted that the current mechanisms for engaging staff and strategic planning should be developed as the company expands to ensure the quality of service is maintained at all times.

During a routine inspection

This was the provider's first inspection since being registered with the Care Quality Commission. An inspection of the premises, vehicles and documentation was completed over two days. All management were involved in the inspection, due to each having responsibility for certain areas.

During our two day visit on 1 and 2 May 2013 we found the management very accommodating and willing to rectify any areas highlighted where further development was needed. Regular emails have been submitted advising the Inspector of action that had been taken to improve paperwork, policy documents and general practice. Photographic evidence was also provided and confirmation that items such as an oxygen cage to improve safety had been ordered.

We found effective systems in place to ensure staff were trained and had the knowledge and skills required, enabling them to do their job. There were systems in place to help minimise the risk of the spread of infection to people

The provider had a feedback system in place which enabled people who used the service to comment on the service received. Of those viewed all were complimentary and comments included 'The service went very well and the staff were very helpful (both ambulance and office staff)' and 'I cannot say a big enough thank you for the excellent way you handled 'X's' transfer.'
