During an assessment under our new approach

We carried out this on-site, announced assessment on 14 May 2024. We found the practice had met regulations. The practice had systems to manage risks, and the recruitment procedures reflected current legislation. Infection control procedures followed published guidance. Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance, and they were treated with dignity and respect. At the time of our assessment, patients could access care, support and treatment when required. There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement. Dr Seema Bahl Dental Practice is in Notting Hill, London and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children. At the time of our assessment, the dental team included 1 principal dentist, 1 associate dentist, 1 qualified dental nurse, 1 trainee dental nurse, 1 dental hygienist, 1 practice manager and 1 receptionist. The practice had a visiting implantologist who worked when required. The practice had 2 treatment rooms. During the assessment we spoke with the principal dentist, the dental nurse, the receptionist and the practice manager.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We did not speak to people who use the service, on this occasion, as we visited the practice when there were no patients present. This was a follow-up inspection to check if the provider had complied with warning notices we had served on 20 December 2012.

We found that the provider had made considerable improvements to ensure people were protected form the risk of infection, people were cared for in a more hygienic environment.

We also found that the provider had made improvements to ensure people were provided with care and treatment by staff that were safely recruited.

We saw an improvement in how the provider managed people's records and ensured they were held securely. The records we checked were accurate and up to date.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People told us that staff were 'very nice' and that the dentist explained their treatments in a way they understood. The service undertook dental assessments and records reflected that people were involved in planning their treatment.

We undertook this inspection in response to concerns raised to us about the cleanliness of the service. We found that the service failed to ensure people were treated in a hygienic environment. The service did not have robust processes in place to prevent the spread of infection.

We checked how the service recruited staff and found that their processes were not sufficiently robust to protect people who use the service.

People who use the service cannot be assured that their personal information is held securely.
