Matlock Road Surgery offers general medical services to approximately 3,000 patients within a residential area of Brighton and Hove. The service is provided by Dr Paul Allan. Regulated activities include diagnostic and screening services, maternity and midwifery services and treatment of disease, disorder and injury.
There is one permanent male GP working in the practice and one female practice nurse. Two locum GPs (male and female) also provide additional regular clinical sessions and cover for times of absence. There are weekly clinical sessions provided by the female locum GP and female patients who prefer a female GP are booked into these sessions for routine appointments.
The service is provided at the following location:
10 Matlock Road, Brighton, BN1 5BF.
Services were delivered to a higher proportion of patients under the age of 18 than local averages, although this was a similar figure to the national average. The practice also had a higher proportion of patients over the age of 65 than the local average, although similar to the national average. Data available shows that the deprivation levels affecting patients was lower than local and national averages with the practice identified as being in the second least deprived decile.
The practice is open between 8.30am and 6.00pm from Monday to Friday with extended hours appointments offered on Tuesday evenings.
The practice has opted out of providing out of hours services to its own patients and uses the services of a local out of hours provider, IC24.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Matlock Road Surgery on 9 November 2018 as part of our inspection programme. The overall rating for the practice was Good, with a requires improvement rating for safe. This inspection was an announced focused inspection carried out on 28 May 2019 to confirm that the practice had addressed the issues identified in requirement notices following the November 2018 inspection. Requirement notices had been issued against regulation 12 (1) (safe care and treatment) and 19 (3) (4) (fit and proper persons employed) of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014. This report covers our findings in relation to the requirements against regulation 12 (1) (safe care and treatment) and regulation 19 (3) (4) (fit and proper persons employed).

At this inspection we found:
- Recruitment checks were carried out in accordance with regulations including for locum staff.
- There were systems to ensure the registration of clinical staff was checked and regularly monitored.
- Blank prescriptions were kept securely, and their use monitored in line with national guidance.
