People were cared for by kind, compassionate and considerate staff. People were treated as individuals. People were able to make choices about their care. Staff were well supported.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

People using the service and their relatives told us staff were kind, caring and supportive. Their comments included, ''They are very kind'', ''They are from the same heritage as [person] and this helps with their understanding of [person's] culture'' and ''We get on well with them.'' The provider had received some compliments and positive feedback about individual care workers. This included the comments, ''I just wanted to say thank you to [the care workers] they have always been kind and caring'' and ''As a family we just want to express our thanks for the excellent care [person] has received.''

Staff had undertaken training about privacy and dignity. They understood the principles of this.

The provider had received positive feedback from external professionals about the care people received. One professional had written, ''Please extend our thanks and gratitude to that carer'' following a good piece of work they had undertaken.

Treating people as individuals

Independence, choice and control

People using the service and their relatives told us they were involved in making decisions about their care. One person commented, ''I am lucky to have them in my home and life.'' Some people were supported to go out in the community or take part in social activities. They were happy with this support. People told us staff supported them to be independent and try things for themselves.

The staff understood each person was cared for in an individual way which reflected their needs and wishes. Staff understood about offering people choices and encouraging them to be independent.

Care plans included information about people's preferences. People were asked about any requirements with their care workers, for example the gender of care workers, or those who spoke a specific language.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Staff told us they felt well supported by managers and each other.

The provider had systems for employee wellbeing, including flexible working arrangements, support with emotional and mental health needs, support for staff with long term health conditions and working parents. They also celebrated positive moments such as when a staff member had a baby and their birthdays. There was a positive atmosphere within the staff team and the provider had arranged away days, special events and financial rewards for good work. The provider invested in an Employee Assistance Programme which provided a 24 our help line for staff if they needed this. There were regular staff meetings and good systems for sharing information.
