During a routine inspection

We spoke with 14 people that used the service and they all told us how happy they were with the care and support that they received. One person told “I can’t fault them, they're always on time and they always stay for the right amount of time”. Another person told us “The staff are very professionally trained and they really get to know you”.

We spoke with three carers or relatives of people that used the service who also told us they were happy with the care that people received. We spoke with three staff members who told us they felt well supported in their roles and that they received an introductory visit when they were going to provide care to a person who was new to the service.

We found that the provider ensured that people consented to the care and treatment that they received. We found that people’s needs were assessed and care and support plans were put in place. We saw that care was delivered in line with people’s care plans.

We found that the provider carried out appropriate checks on staff before they started work and that there were regular quality assurance checks of the service. We found that the provider acted appropriately when they received any comments or complaints about the service.

During a themed inspection looking at Domiciliary Care Services

We carried out a themed inspection looking at the services provided by domiciliary care agencies. As part of this programme of targeted inspection we asked people to tell us what it was like to receive services from this agency. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission inspector who was supported by a person who has had direct of experience of using the services of a domiciliary care agency. This 'expert by experience' took part in telephone surveys of people using this agency and their findings were incorporated into this report.

We were able to speak on the telephone with 11 people who received a service from Home Instead. We also visited four people at home to ask them for their views about the standard of care they received.

People told us that they were personally introduced to their carer before their service had started. They said they had felt reassured by this.

Each person we visited at home told us they were happy with the service, that the carers were reliable, and that the help they received had been agreed with them in advance. They said the staff were all friendly and treated them with respect.

Comments made to us about the service included, "They are always prompt and reliable'", "The office staff are always so lovely to talk to'" "When my mother is confused they don't patronise her, or correct her, they treat her very kindly, as we wish her to be treated'"
