This helped to ensure that people’s care was individualised and specific to their needs.

Person-centred Care

Score: 3

We observed care and support being delivered at different times of the day by range of staff. The service was suitable for people’s needs. There were a range of communal and private spaces available, which helped ensure people had opportunities to interact with others or have quieter time in private. People were supported to personalise their bedrooms, which helped to create a comfortable and safe space. We observed very positive interactions between staff and people. People were very comfortable in staff’s presence and staff were knowledgeable about people’s specific communication and behavioural needs. The atmosphere at the service was homely, relaxed and people appeared happy. Some people were assessed as needing 1 to 1 staffing to promote their safety. The provider balanced safety with the need to give people privacy sand personal space. We observed that staff were intuitive to what level of support people needed, which helped to promote their wellbeing and engagement in daily activities

People were unable to give verbal feedback to us about staffing due to their complex communication needs. Relatives told us that people were treated as individuals and their care was designed around their needs. They told us they were involved in care planning and that staff communicated and consulted with them regarding updates and changes. Comments included, “They [staff] involve me in planning [my relative’s] care.”

Staff had a good understanding of people’s needs and were committed to ensuring they delivered personalised care. The provider had a team of behavioural specialists, who helped develop care plans tailored to people as individuals. Staff were positive about the support they received from the provider’s senior staff and behavioural specialists.
