Responsive – this means we looked at evidence that people were always at the centre of how care is planned and delivered. At our last inspection we rated this key question Good. During out assessment of this key question, we assessed 2 quality statements in the responsive key question and found areas of concern. The scores for these areas have been combined with scores based on the rating from the last inspection, which was good. Though the assessment of these areas indicated areas of concern since the last inspection, our rating for the key question remains good. People were not supported following ‘Right Support, Right Care, Right Culture’ guidance. People were not always supported in a person centred way. Sometimes peoples plans for the day were rescheduled if staff (who could drive) were not available. People did not always have the opportunity to take part in activities outside of the care home during the evenings. The provider worked in partnership with other health professionals to meet people’s goals. Relatives told us staff supported people to maintain relationships. Staff understood people’s communication needs and used other forms of communication to understand people’s wishes and needs.

Listening to and involving people

We observed staff speaking or communicating with people in their preferred method. When we were unsure what people were trying to communicate, staff were able to explain and staff helped people to understand our questions when needed. Relatives told us staff communicated effectively.

Staff had good knowledge of individual communication needs, they knew how to facilitate communication and when people were trying to tell them something.

Care plans contained effective and preferred methods of communication. Advocates were available to support people who required that level of support. Advocates are professionals who help people express their views and wishes, and help people to stand up for their rights.

Equity in experiences and outcomes

People were supported to access a range of activities to ensure people's diverse needs were met. Relatives told us their loves ones were supported to go out in the community.

Staff ensured people living at the service were able to receive any care and treatment they needed. Staff advocated for people when necessary to ensure people had the right treatment at the right time. Staff knew people well. They facilitated people to live their lives incorporating interests and aspirations. Staff maintained people’s routines. People were supported with keeping in touch with their families, healthcare appointments and when they were in hospital.

Systems were in place to ensure people had access to healthcare, activities and their families. This included communication support guidelines for each person. These provided details regarding how best to communicate with people to ensure people were not disadvantaged because of communication challenges.
