Assessing needs

Score: 3

People’s needs were assessed prior to the commencement of the service. Peoples and relatives comments were positive in relation to their experience and confirmed they were fully involved in this process. Comments included, “When we first took the service on, I was involved with the manager in completing a very comprehensive care plan that identified [family member's] requirements and needs as well as looking at what their likes and dislikes were, they were very thorough”, “My parents have been using Home Instead for 2 years and they certainly deliver what was discussed and required when they did an assessment of their needs initially”, “The manager completed a comprehensive care plan, and they came to see us to check all is well and if there are any changes” and, “When [family member] needed care we approached Home Instead and the manager visited. We sat down all together and discussed their care needs.”

The service had a designated member of staff responsible for overseeing new care package referrals. The registered manager told us, “We have a minimum of 1 hour calls, we introduce all care professionals to clients. We are very much about providing quality time and continuity of care to people. We build in travel time. We are hot on ensuring clients receive their full care time. We let the client know if the carer is running late.”

People's needs were assessed before they were supported by the service. Assessments included people's individual needs, risks, and preferences. The service introduced any new carers to people before they delivered care, people we spoke to confirmed this, and where possible matched people with care staff. The care coordinator told us, “We try to match the carer’s personalities and interests with clients’ interests. A recent person started in January 2024 with specific interests. We thought of [named member of staff] and they are similar, and they get on fantastically.”
