People and their relatives told us that they were involved in care planning and there are opportunities for people and their relatives to give feedback. However, care plans were not always person-centred and some relatives of family members with dementia raised concerns regarding the responsiveness of staff.

Person-centred Care

People told us that if required the same agency staff were used so they did have some knowledge of them. People and their relatives told us that they had seen and had input into their care plans.

The Manager told us that she was getting to know people and talking to them. Staff gave examples of how they know people well including telling us their favourite music and food and drink preferences. Staff also understood how people's conditions impact their health and well-being. Staff told us that even with their concerns about staffing levels that people are still at the centre of their care and that they ask for their choices and preferences. The management team told us that one area they were focusing on was making sure care plans were person centred.

During the visit we saw people being offered a choice of drink, people being shown the different lunch options, asked what music they would like and if their family was visiting.

Equity in experiences and outcomes

Some relatives raised concerns about the responsiveness of staff when supporting their family member who is unable to communicate their needs. This included a relative who felt that their family member would benefit from being with others more, a relative who's family member needed their TV aerial fixing, a relative who's family member has swallowing difficulties and a relative who's family member may decline support. However, relatives also reported being confident and reassured that their family member who has mobility and communication difficulties is well looked after.

The chef told us that 'people can have whatever on the menu and it will be modified to meet their needs. Important to get people eating and avoid being malnourished, want to give people what they want and make it look appetising.' However staff raised concerns about people not being able to access activities and outings due to their mobility and dementia diagnosis. Staff also reported raising concerns for people who cannot speak up for themselves and not being listened to.

We saw evidence that referrals had been made to professionals when there was a concern including dietitian and GP. However, there wasn't always information in care plans about people's individual needs including specific care plans for Epilepsy and Parkinson's disease.
